Cancer - refuse treatment in crisis

Advance Decision for an acute complication

You may recover from your present crisis, such as respiratory failure or severe infection, and you may wish to receive every treatment possible. However, you may wish withdrawal of assisted breathing or wish to refuse some or all of the following treatments.

If you would like withdrawal or refusal of treatment in any or all of these scenarios, select the relevant options for the decisions to be added to your Advance Decision.

If you have difficulty breathing either because of aspiration into your lungs or developed a chest infection. In this circumstance:

  • You may refuse a trial of intubation.
  • You may refuse any assisted ventilation for the purpose of keeping you alive.
  • You wish to be kept comfortable and have every treatment to keep you comfortable, for example being sedated, to ensure you do not suffer pain or discomfort.

  • If I have difficulty breathing I do not want any assisted breathing for the purpose of keeping me alive.

If you stop breathing or your heart stops. In this circumstance:

  • You can decide you do not want to be resuscitated. Refusing Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) will cause your life to end.

If you develop a life threatening infection and / or failure of one or more internal organs. In this circumstance:

  • You may wish to refuse any treatment for the purpose of keeping you alive.
  • You may wish to refuse advanced organ support.

You understand that such refusal will probably result in your death.
